There are still individuals living a nomadic life, moving for the sake of their reindeer herd or their own food supply. They live on reindeer meat, cheese and milk, and fish. They use the reindeer hide as a part of their clothing, and to make lavo, similar to a teepee, a recognized native american dwelling. The center-hole serves as both a smoke hole as well as an entrance into the spirit world.

The World Tree

The concept of middle-earth lives within the beliefs of the Lapps in the story of the World Tree. This ancient story or myth saya that the World tree is fixed on a cosmic axis. The roots are in the underworld, and the trunk is the world as we know it, the every-day world. Reaching upward into the branches we find the real of the heavens.

The pole star, or North star is a sacred or honored point in the universe since it remains steady, unlike the other stars that shift throughout the year. It is believed that the top of the tree of life connects with the pole or North star.
